January 8th: Museum and Mosque

Museum and Mosque

Maropeng, the Cradle of Humankind

Today, we visited Maropeng, the Cradle of Humankind, and it was amazing! The highlight of the visit was the underground boat ride, which took us through a journey showing how our planet was formed. The visuals and effects made the experience both exciting and educational. Each exhibit at Maropeng was thoughtfully designed, making it fun and interesting to learn about human evolution. The displays were engaging and informative, helping us understand our history in a very interactive way.

After, our visit to Maropeng, we visited the Nizamiye Mosque, and it was truly stunning with its intricate design and details. Our speaker shared some interesting insights, particularly about the small Muslim population in South Africa. The time of prayer is very important and getting to participate in an aspect of the practice was very insightful. Islam, like many other religions in Africa, hasn't been widely practiced in some areas, which is why the Muslim community remains relatively small.
